Of these, Airs Above the Ground is one of my favorites. Some of them have held up surprising well over the years, despite the inevitable dating that any contemporary novel experiences as time moves on and it is set no longer in the present but in the past. Stewart may be best known today for her blockbuster Arthurian saga (The Crystal Caves, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, The Wicked Day), but it was her romantic suspense novels which first gained her recognition. Slower-paced than today’s frenetic thrillers, Stewart’s books offer readers a subtler, more leisurely and perhaps more nuanced experience. ''It's all so beastly complicated,'' as Vanessa would surely say, but it's also good lighter than air entertainment. Lewis turns up incognito- and don't forget the Lippizaner horses, where the title comes from (it's the name for one of their fabulous leaps). Van and Tim find and join the burned up circus, where her professional skill is in demand. She is running after her husband Lewis, who was last seen in a newsreel clip with a beautiful blonde at an Austrian circus fire when he should have been in Sweden.

Soooo.Mary Stewart has taken Vanessa, a young married English veterinarian, to Austria with her seventeen year old cousin Tim, who is running away from his fluffy smother-mother.

Circuses, as the ringmaster always says, are for children of all ages. Austria is the place where the pastries, the Lippizaner horses, and the international intrigues come from.
